Water is an essential nutrient, and is very important for proper hydration. Next to oxygen, water is the most essential element for survival. Your overall body weight is 2/3 water. A person can survive about two months without food, but only a few days without water. It is important to continually replenish your wanter intake. Every day your body loses 2-3 quarts of water through sweat, urination, excreation and breathing. Your body loses even more water with exerciseing or consuming high fiber diets. Also if you consume caffeine or alcohol you should drink more then the recommended 8-10 cups a day.

Hints for increasing water consumption

  • Eat foods with higher water content like: cucumber, watermelon, lettuce, celery, grapes, oranges or tomatoes
  • Keep a water bottle handy
  • Mix, ice and fruit in a blender to create a smoothie.
  • Try decaffenated tea or coffee
  • Limit soda and juice, they have more sugar than water.
