Obesity is a huge problem. According to statistics, over 70% of Americans adults are either overweight or obese.
No Single thing, including sugar, causes obesity. Many factors work together to contribute to a consistent energy (calorie) surplus, which ultimately leads to fat gain. One of those things is often sugar, but not always, and not alone.
They tell us that, since 1980, Americans continued to eat the same total amount of fat but ate more carbohydrates, especially refined ones that included added sugars.
So as a result we ended up eating more sugar and other carbs on top of the fat we were already eating, resulting to an additional 200-400 calories a day.
This incresed energy intake alone, combined with decreasing rates of daily physical activity is a good explanation of why we are getting heavier.
